Camilio Tafoya, Santa Clara Pueblo, 1902-1995

BiographyCamilio is the father of Grace Medicine Flower. Agapita Tafoya is the mother of Grace Medicine Flower. Grace Medicine Flower is the niece of Margaret Tafoya, and sister of Joseph Lone Wolf (Dillingham 1994:184-185). Camilio Tafoya also can be found individually as a ceramic artist. Grace Medicine Flower is included, with a short statement, in the Tafoya family section of Rick Dillingham’s Fourteen Families (1994:208). In this statement she says she worked with her father when she broke her wrist. According to King Galleries Medicine Flower began making pottery in the 1960s; the King Gallery site describes her signatures and history of work. According to Andrea Fisher Fine Pottery, sgrafitto was innovated by her father Camilio Tafoya and inspired by his father who was a wood carver. Camilio originally worked with his wife Agapita; they taught their children; when she died Camilio worked with his children and they refined sgrafitto technique.(Katharine Fernstrom, Binder collection consultation, 6.7.16).
