BiographyJiang Yongxi (1900-1957), also known as Yanru, Shisheng, and Julian Old Man, was a famous pottery carver in the Republic of China and a native of Shushan, Yixing. In 1921, he entered the carving class of the Ceramic Institute and studied under the famous teacher Shao Yunru . Under the guidance of a famous teacher, he learned various pottery carving techniques, and was named "Yanru" by Shao Yunru.

After completing his art, Jiang Yongxi was hired as a technician by Yixing Utilization Company and carved a large number of purple clay vessels in bottles and basins. In the early 1930s, Jiang Yongxi was hired as a technician by the famous Yixing store "Mao Shunxing", specializing in carving flower pots. In the mid-1930s, Jiang worked as a technician at Wu Desheng Company and cooperated with Ren Ganting. Ren did calligraphy and painting, and Jiang engraved pottery. All were signed "Tao" or "Qitao". After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Jiang Yongxi joined the cooperative and continued his career in pottery carving until his death in 1957 at the age of 57. Its traditional utensils include alms bowl pots, flat-belly pots, bamboo-jointed pots with beams, and hexagonal flower pots.
