Master S

Flemish, active 1516 - 1545
BiographyFrom British Museum: Prints with this monogram are miscellaneous and numerous, and seem to have come from a large workshop which specialised in prints intended for use in illuminated manuscripts. Stylistically the prints are related to those of the Master AC, also working in the Netherlands in the second quarter of the XVIc, who is called in the BM (wrongly) Allaert Claesz. It seems that the monogram S signifies a commercial publisher and reprinter, rather than an engraver.

Master S was identified by Delen in 1935 (II pp.36-7) with Sanders Alexander van Brugsal; born at Brussels; from 1505, in Antwerp; 1516, created master; died c.1545; dated engravings 1519 and 1520. But there is no reason to accept this.
