Monogrammist HL
German, active early 16th century
Engraver and woodcutter whose prints are dated between 1511 and 1533, also documented as the sculptor of the high altarpiece in Breisach between 1523 and 1526.
The artist has been variously identified with Hans Leu, Heinrich Lautensack or Hans Schlaiß. In Hollstein, he is catalogued under the name Hans Leinberger, although the editors specifically stress in the preface that this identification is probably incorrect. Since then the monogram has been associated with the Southern German wood sculptor Hans Loy.
