Lê Van Khoa

American, born Vietnam, 1933
BiographyEmigrated to USA in 1975; taught photography at Salisbury State Universty, Salisbury, Maryland, 1975-1976,

Le Van Khoa was born in the Mekong River delta in Vietnam. Following the withdrawal of US troops at the conclusion of the USA-Vietnam war, the self-taught photographer arrived in the USA in May of 1975. After teaching photography at Salisbury State College in Maryland between 1976 and 1977, Le settled in southern California where he has composed, arranged, produced and written about music over the past 40 years. Le's 1973-1974 images of the end of the day and nightfall serve as metaphors for war-weary Vietnam in the last years of two decades of conflict. In quiet shadows, fishermen and their families live aboard their fishing boats, drawn to shore for the night; a child sleeps in the arms of a watchful mother; figures cross the seemingly lifeless expanse of Bao Tran, Vietnam's small desert; nets hang dried and ready for the next day's catch.
